Witness describes fighting flames

A man who fought back the flames of a fire in a St Peter Port flat in which two people were injured has described his experience.

Dwayne Ingrouille was one of the first people on the scene of the blaze in Lower Vauvert.

He said the flames were about 7ft (2.1m) tall and he was worried that a man hanging from the roof would fall.

The fire was one of five during the early hours of Sunday which police believe may be linked.

Mr Ingrouille said: "We had a guy screaming from the roof, he was hanging from the dormer window. The flames were up to 7ft high.

"He couldn't get off, we were a bit scared he was going to fall."

Firefighters said a man and woman at the flat had suffered smoke inhalation.

On the same night, emergency services went to a car fire in Union Street and a rubbish fire in Allez Street.

Later a motorcycle in the Charotterie was damaged by fire and advertising hoardings were alight in Colbourn Road.

Detective Sergeant Karl Zerlinger, of Guernsey police, said: "We've done a number of examinations forensically at the scenes of the five fires we're talking about.

"We're also looking at any independent evidence, such as CCTV, in the area. We're relying on the public to assist us in anything they may know."
