Open day to recruit 'high flyer'

Air traffic controllers
Air traffic controllers need a good all round standard of education

Guernsey Airport is holding an open day in a bid to recruit a new trainee air traffic controller.

Men and women over the age of 18 have been invited to pre-register for the open day on Wednesday, where they can meet the team and ask questions.

Ray Plant, manager of air traffic control, said training would take about a year in both Guernsey and the UK.

The work would include managing aircraft as they near the airport, and arranging them in landing order.

It would also involve working in the control tower relaying landing instructions to pilots.

Adrian Gidney, who recently qualified as a tower controller, told BBC News the role was not like the average desk job and applicants needed to be adaptable and able to think on their feet.

Mr Plant said applicants should have a good all round standard of education, with five GCSEs and some further education.
