Health report highlights costs

The rising costs of health care and tackling obesity are some of Guernsey's top priorities highlighted in this year's Annual Health Report.

Director of Public Health Dr David Jeffs said Guernsey was in good health but could benefit from fresh ideas.

The report is published each year to provide an historical archive of the island's health.

It also emphasised areas the States and the public should be looking at improving.

Dr Jeffs said that with an ageing population and increasing costs in health care both on and off the island, Guernsey needed to ensure there was funding available to meet rising expectations.

He also highlighted in the report the need for more education on issues such as preventable cancers.

He said the island needed to reverse the trend of rising levels of obesity by getting the States, the business sector and the community working together to combat the problem.
