Islands' bakeries sale announced

Cimandis employs more than 400 people in the Channel Islands

The largest bakeries in the Channel Islands are to be sold, it has been announced.

Cimandis, which is owned by Sandpiper CI, includes Warry's Bakery in Guernsey, CI Bakery in Jersey and food service operations in both islands.

It also has a food distribution operation in Alderney.

The sale of the business, which currently employs more than 400 people across the islands, is expected to take several months.

Sandpiper CI completed a 260m takeover of Channel Island Traders in August last year.

'Profitable business'

It recently announced frozen food specialists Iceland would be opening a shop in the island.

In May, it sold 65 pubs in Jersey, Guernsey and Alderney, Jersey Brewery, and the distribution firms Victor Hugo (Jersey) and Bucktrout & Co (Guernsey).

Tony O'Neill, Sandpiper CI's chief executive officer, said the company was selling Cimandis in order to concentrate on its retail business.

"Cimandis is a profitable business with a strong market position," he said.

"However, we stated from the outset that our focus would be on making improvements to our retail business."

It is not yet known whether any jobs will be affected.
