Anaesthesia used with MRI scanner

MRI scanner
An MRI scan can produce pictures from angles all around the body.

The MRI scanner at Princess Elizabeth Hospital in Guernsey will soon be available to more patients.

Patients' movement can hinder scans, but by working with anaesthetics, babies, children and others previously excluded can now be scanned.

A Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scanner builds up a picture of the inside of a patient's body without the need to take x-rays.

The first patient is due to undergo the assisted procedure on Thursday.

'Improve treatment'

The Princess Elizabeth scanner is the only one with the anaesthetic facility in the Channel Islands.

The hospital said it will improve overall assessment and treatment of patients.

The £800,000 scanner arrived at the hospital in August last year.

It uses no x-ray radiation, shows up soft tissues and a single scan can produce pictures from angles all around the body.
