Emergency procedures are tested

A live exercise staged to test emergency procedures at Guernsey's hospital has been declared a success.

The exercise, code-named Exercise Peregrine, was the first of its kind to be held for at least 13 years.

It was staged by the Accident and Emergency Department at the Princess Elizabeth Hospital, with the St John Ambulance and Rescue Service.

Guernsey's Director of Public Health, who co-ordinates the Major Incident Plan, said it was "very worthwhile".

The mock incident, which finished just before 1700 BST, featured simulated casualties with life-like make-up depicting the sort of wounds and injuries which could be dealt with in a major incident.

Dr David Jeffs said: "It was very reassuring to know that if Guernsey was to have a major incident we have the infrastructure in place to deal with it.

"It was very worthwhile."
