Island pupils walking to school

Children walking to school
Walking has health benefits and is better for the environment

Schools in Guernsey are taking part in a campaign to encourage parents, pupils and teachers to take up regular exercise as part of a daily routine.

Seven schools are taking part in Walk to School week, along with about two million people in the UK.

Pupils will also be auditing walking routes, forming "walking buses" and going out to learn road safety skills.

The children will record how they get to school and will receive certificates to reward their achievements.

Campaign organisers claim about 50% of pupils to not walk to school.

They say an increase in the number of children being driven to school is contributing to the increase in childhood obesity, urban congestion and pollution.
