Concern over pay election delay

Public sector pay negotiations have been taking place for months

Public sector workers in Guernsey are worried about the progress of their annual pay negotiations.

Manual workers have threatened industrial action if they are not awarded an increase based on an RPI figure of 4.9% plus 3%.

Ron Le Cras from the Transport and General Workers' Union, said the General Election could delay talks.

But a Public Sector Remunerations Committee spokesman said any delay was unlikely to be "significant".

The committee, which is responsible for the annual pay award, has been in protracted discussions for several months.

A new committee will be formed after the election on 23 April, and depending on the election results, some members may change.

The spokesman told BBC News committee members were likely to be appointed in the second week of May.

"Obviously new members will have to be brought up to speed on where the negotiations have got to," he said.

"But it's just unfortunate a settlement hasn't been reached before the General Election."
