Tobacco tax could be set to rise
The States of Guernsey is considering whether to increase the tax on tobacco.

If the current rate of inflation continues it could add about 30 pence on the price of a packet in 2009.

As part of a new anti-smoking strategy recommended that duty on all tobacco products goes up by at least the Retail Price Index + 3% each year until 2013.

The import of small packets of 10 could also be banned, as it is thought these are more affordable so young people are more likely to buy them.

There could also be tighter regulations to stop under age sales of tobacco, and shops could have to apply for licences in future to sell these items.

The Home Department is also being asked to look into whether to make Guernsey prison smoke free, and whether to ban smoking while driving.

All the proposals will go to the States in March.
