Closing school 'would hit island'
Supporters of a Guernsey primary school earmarked for closure have claimed shutting it down would be detrimental to the whole of the island.

The School Parish Committee has written to the Education Department stating why La Mare De Carteret must stay open.

The Education Department is considering the closure of three primary schools as part of a review of the sector.

Gillian Tidd said the school provided a vital service for the island and its staff have unique skills.

She said that if it were to close a valuable resource would be lost.

Although no firm decision has been made it is understood St Andrews and St Sampsons Infants and La Mare De Carteret Primary School could close as part of the review.

A drop in birth rates in the island is being blamed for the review.

If approved, the closure of the three schools could affect more than 600 pupils, who will be moved to other facilities.
