Opposition to paid parking scheme
A deputy is opposing a scheme for paid parking in Guernsey.

Deputy Al Brouard is filing an amendment calling for proposals to charge for parking in St Peter Port to be overturned.

Charges of 15p an hour to use the long-stay car parks in St Peter Port are due to be rolled out from October.

The scheme aims to fund the island's road transport strategy. Mr Brouard says funds should come from increases on petrol costs instead.

The deputy says parking charges will be expensive to collect and lower paid workers would end up funding the transport strategy for the whole island.

He predicted it would cost more than £100,000 to collect paid parking and said an increase on petrol would take minimal effort and cost.

The issues will be debated at the end of the month.
