Island to create energy watchdog

A regulator is to be created to monitor Alderney's tidal power industry.

It follows the decision allowing Alderney Renewable Energy to start building a £6m test turbine on the seabed in the next year.

The States is set to create the Alderney Commission for Renewable Energy later this month.

The body will work to ensure exploitation of natural resources does not damage the fishing industry, shipping or the environment.

The island's seas are considered to be a good resource for tidal power.

The States has given the go-ahead to trial new technology off Alderney for the next five years.
