Champion driver promotes safety
A new road safety campaign in Guernsey is being promoted by World Touring Car Champion Andy Priaulx.

He has joined forces with Guernsey Police to encourage so-called "boy racers" to use a race track for speeding instead of streets.

The Guernsey-born racing driver is concerned about the number of young people who put lives at risk by racing around the island's narrow roads.

The aim is to encourage them to try out karting instead.

Mr Priaulx, 32, who began karting when he was eight, will form a team to take on other racers at a karting event on 15 July.

Money raised at the campaign launch will be in aid of the NSPCC.

A police spokesman said he welcomed any initiative which helped stop young people speeding.

"I think there's merit in anything that helps to keep them from chasing around the island - in some cases causing mayhem and madness, " he said.
