Increase in drink-drive arrests

Billboards, banners and posters featured in the campaign
Guernsey's Christmas drink-drive campaign is being described as a success, despite seeing a slight increase in the number of arrests.

Out of 15 arrests in 2006, 10 people have appeared in court and three more cases are awaiting test results.

No further action was taken in two cases. There were 14 arrests in 2005.

The high-profile campaign included a billboard, banners and posters. Police said that no-one was injured by drink-driving throughout the campaign.

Officers stopped about 1,000 vehicles as part of the month-long, island-wide campaign in December.

Supt Ian Morellec said even though the figures are virtually the same as 2005, the campaign did prevent accidents.

He said: "You might view it as a disappointment. But, on the other hand, if we had not gone to all that effort, the figures may have been considerably higher."
