Move to block democracy decision

The seats in the new Chief Pleas will be reduced from 52 to 28

A last-ditch attempt is being made to defend the guaranteed right of landowners to seats in Sark's governing body, the Chief Pleas.

Sark is set to become fully democratic next year after an opinion poll showed 56% of those who participated wanted a fully democratic government.

Organisers said this was a sufficient margin to press ahead with scrapping the right of landowners to seats.

But now two members say it does not show enough support for full democracy.

They want a working party set up to review the poll and advise Chief Pleas of its findings.

The island needed to reform its constitution to comply with European human rights laws.
