Deputy wants voting age lowered

A Guernsey deputy has called for the voting age to be lowered to 16, claiming it would be a fairer system.

Mike O'Hara said lowering the age from 18 would reflect the time when young people started to earn and contributed to the island by paying tax.

He said it would give young people a deeper understanding of how the States are run and help them to learn what the States do with their money.

Sixteen is also the age when people start to form mature opinions, he said.
