Motorists under safety spotlight

Alderney does not require motorcyclists to wear crash helmets
Drivers in Alderney are coming under increased pressure to take safety issues more seriously.

The island is the only place in Britain where it is not illegal to travel in a vehicle without a seatbelt or ride a motorbike without a crash helmet.

One States member, Ralph Burridge, wants this to change.

This is the second time he has called for the island to come into line with the rest of Britain. He is hoping this time his proposal will be successful.

Mr Burridge thinks his original attempt may have been rejected because it included both the compulsory wearing of crash helmets and seatbelts in the one proposal.

He thinks that some members may have supported the wearing of crash helmets on bikes but not the mandatory wearing of seatbelts and so voted against his suggestion.
