Licence fee aids alcohol strategy

Plans include educating youngsters on the health risks of drinking
Guernsey States will use revenue from increased liquor licence fees to fund the island's alcohol strategy aimed at ending binge drinking.

Proposals include a clamp-down on cheap drink promotions, alcohol-free zones and educating young people.

Health Minister Peter Roffey has warned it will not solve all the island's drink problems.

"We simply want to put policies in place which will militate against the excessive abuse of alcohol," he said.

"We are not naive or a latter-day temperance movement, we are not trying to stop people drinking," added Mr Roffey

"These proposals are not a cure to the problem of alcohol abuse, they're simply a package which we believe will lead to an amelioration of those problems."
