Import tax hits tsunami charity
A shipment of aid, bound for Sri Lanka's tsunami victims, will be subject to a 30% import tax, according to the founder of a Guernsey charity.

Linda Garnham from Aid Reaching Children says the Sri Lankan government is making delivery difficult.

She also claims some of the aid is not reaching its destination because officials are auctioning the contents and keeping the proceeds.

The consignment was organised to help set up an orphanage in Columbo.

"It's a disgrace," she said. "If the aid does get through, it now faces a 30% import tax."
