Police, ambulance and rescue teams on Guernsey said a major rescue operation has proved to be a false alarm.
Emergency services were alerted when a member of public reported seeing what they thought was a body on rocks off the Torteval cliffs.
An inshore rescue boat managed to get a better view of the area and reported it was not a body but pieces of clothing.
Ambulance incident officer Andy Walford said that the member of public's call was made with good intent.
He added the situation could have been much more serious.
