Outrage over Moscow synagogue raid

The World Jewish Congress says Russian police have raided one of the main synagogues in Moscow.

The Congress says the raid at the Moscow Choral Synagogue took place on Thursday while most of the leaders and officials of the city's Jewish community were visiting Israel on a solidarity trip.

Detectives are reported to have searched for accounts documents on the premises.

The World Jewish Congress says it is outraged that the raid took place during a Jewish holiday and plans to lodge a complaint with the Russian government.

Correspondents say the raid was probably linked to an investigation into the Russian media mogul, Vladimir Gusinsky, who was among the synagogue's benefactors.

Mr Gusinsky is currently in Israel.
