French mayor outlaws death

The mayor of a south of France resort whose cemetery has run out of space has issued a decree ordering people not to die within the borough boundaries.

The mayor of the Cote d'Azur resort of Le Lavandou, Gil Bernardi, says the order applies to anyone not in possession of a family vault.

The mayor took the decision after a court in Nice had blocked his plans for a new cemetery.

Objectors wanted it situated on the site of a remote quarry.
