London Stock Exchange chief resigns

The chief executive of the London Stock Exchange, Gavin Casey, has resigned.

His decision follows an attempt by shareholders on Thursday to remove him; he narrowly survived.

Mr Casey had been widely criticised when a planned merger with Frankfurt's stock exchange collapsed.

In a show of hands, a majority of shareholders voted not to re-elect him.

But this decision was later overturned in a secret ballot. Mr Casey will be succeeded by the Stock Exchange chairman, Don Cruickshank, until a replacement is appointed.
