Eight people have been killed in an attack in Russia's southern region of Dagestan, officials say.

They said those targeted were workers repairing a broadcasting mast, who were hit by a blast and by gunfire as they were being escorted by police.

A firefight broke out between the assailants and police. Several police officials were reportedly injured.

Dagestan has been troubled by Islamist militancy that has spread from the North Caucasus region of Chechnya.

Ingushetia, which lies to the east of Chechnya, has also been affected.

The overnight attack took place about 80km (50 miles) south of Dagestan's capital, Makhachkala.
