French poll hits Sarkozy's party with heavy losses

President Sarkozy's centre-right UMP party has suffered a heavy defeat in the French regional elections, keeping control of only one of France's 22 regions.

With more than 97% of votes counted, the Socialist-led opposition alliance took more than half of the vote with the UMP on just over a third.

Emma Jane Kirby reports from Paris.
