Romanian security chief resigns over smuggling scandal

The head of one of Romania's security services has resigned over a multi-million dollar cigarette smuggling scandal.

Nicu Anghel resigned as director of the Special Security Forces in the wake of official allegations that one of his deputies was behind the smuggling scandal.

The deputy, Colonel Gheorghe Trutulescu, went missing after police announced on Monday that they had foiled an attempt to smuggle three-thousand cases of cigarettes through a military airport Otopeni near Bucharest.

The police said the operation was a major success against organised crime.
