Voters in Switzerland have rejected plans for a system of state-funded lawyers to represent animals in court.

Animal rights groups had argued that many instances of cruelty to animals were going unpunished without layers to represent their case.

The proposal was rejected by around 70% of voters in a referendum.

Imogen Foulkes reports.
