A Russian Orthodox priest was shot dead outside his home near Moscow after challenging a group of rowdy drunks, Russian media report.

Father Alexander Filippov, 39, died from a pistol shot in Satino-Russkoye, a village in Podolsk district.

His widow Yelena, quoted by Interfax news agency, said some of the drunks had been urinating in the hallway.

Police have arrested three suspects. Last month another Moscow priest was shot dead in his church.

One of those held over the killing on Tuesday night had served a previous jail sentence for murder, prosecutors said.

Father Alexander reportedly died from a single shot fired at his back. He is survived by his widow and three teenage daughters.
