Barack Obama, with his wife Michelle, has made a visit to Oslo to receive the Nobel Prize for Peace - awarded to him only 11 months after he was elected US president.
His first task in a day of events was to sign the guest book at the Norwegian Nobel Institute, watched over by officials and his wife.
Mr Obama then received the prize – a diploma, a medal and 10m Norwegian Kroner ($1.4m).
The accolade was awarded to Mr Obama in October for his "extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and co-operation between peoples". He said there were more deserving candidates than him.
The ceremony came days after Mr Obama announced he was sending 30,000 extra US soldiers to the war in Afghanistan.
In his acceptance speech, Mr Obama said the US had to uphold moral standards when waging wars that were necessary and justified.
The security operation was massive, with the streets heavily guarded. A small group of anti-war protesters were outside the building where the award ceremony took place.
Amid a large audience in Oslo, American actor Will Smith was seated with his wife and daughter.
After the ceremony, Barack and Michelle Obama appeared on the balcony of their hotel to wave at the traditional torchlight procession in the street below.
The president rounded off the day's events by joining other Nobel prize winners and the Norwegian family at a banquet in his honour.
