Although serious matters were on the agenda, from the outside the first summit between Vladimir Putin and Jiang Zemin appeared very relaxed.

One European newspaper has even suggested that the thought of China "warms the cockles" of the Russian president's heart, whilst Mr Jiang is said to like nothing more than to "belt out" hearty Russian songs.
