Two British men have been fined by a court for tossing pigeons in the air at a market in the Polish city of Krakow.

The two birds were unable to open their wings which were broken when they plummeted to the ground.

The culprits, both aged 24, were from Barrow-in-Furness and Ulverston in Cumbria, but their surnames were not released under Polish privacy laws.

Prosecutor Boguslawa Marcinkowska said they pleaded guilty to animal cruelty and were fined 600 zlotys (£130) each.

The men were fined on Wednesday following the incident at Krakow's historic Renaissance market on 24 October.

The prosecutor said it was not known whether the pigeons survived.

The Foreign Office said the British consulate in Poland was not informed about the court hearing.
