The judge in the trial against Radovan Karadzic has ruled it can go ahead in the former Bosnian-Serb leader's absence after Mr Karadzic refused to attend for a second day.

The prosecution has begun its case against Mr Karadzic, who is accused of genocide and war crimes in the Bosnian war of the 1990s.

Separately, former Bosnian Serb President Biljana Plavsic, convicted of war crimes in 2003, has been released from a Swedish jail for good behaviour.

Allan Little reports from The Hague.
