Islamist ex-mayor starts prison sentence in Turkey

An Islamist former mayor in Turkey has begun a one-year jail sentence after being found guilty late last year of inciting hatred.

The jailing of Sukru Karatepe, the former mayor of the central town of Kayseri, comes only days after the mayor of Turkey's biggest city Istanbul received a ten-month prison sentence for similar activities.

He'd given a speech describing mosques as barracks, and faithful muslims as soldiers.

Police tightened security around major mosques in an attempt to prevent a repetition of protests which followed the sentencing of Istanbul's mayor.
