US Vice-President Joe Biden is to fly to Tbilisi on Wednesday for talks with Georgian President, Mikhail Saakashvili, who has faced mass protests calling for his resignation since April.

Mr Biden is expected to pledge more support for Mr Saakashvili's government and to discuss Georgia's path to NATO membership, which was stalled by the conflict with Russia almost a year ago.

Tome Esslemont reports.
