The authorities in Russia say a prominent human rights activist in the southern region of Chechnya has been found dead in the neighbouring region of Ingushetia.
Earlier reports said the activist, Natalia Estemirova, was abducted from home in Chechnya on Wednesday morning.
BBC Moscow Correspondent Rupert Wingfield-Hayes says Ms Estemirova documented hundreds of cases of torture.
