Lawyers for the former president of Liberia, Charles Taylor, have begun presenting his defence at the special tribunal for Sierra Leone in the Hague.
Charles Taylor denies 11 charges, arising from the civil war in Sierra Leone, during which more than 100,000 people died.
Mr Taylor is accused of crimes including murder, rape and torture.
