Euro election at a glance 2/6/09

DAY IN A NUTSHELL

Opinion polls show plunging support for the UK's governing Labour Party, and Conservative leader David Cameron has stepped up the pressure, insisting that he will not let PM Gordon Brown "off the hook" over the Lisbon Treaty. The Conservatives have published a bill aimed at paving the way for a referendum on the treaty this year.

Czech President Vaclav Klaus is delaying signing the treaty, and says it is pointless to try to whip up enthusiasm for these elections. "There's not a real European community of people, and they are not Europeans - they are French, Czechs, Germans, Poles," he said.

DAILY QUOTES

"Judging by the pre-election campaign, we are all likely to give the EU a yellow card."

"Europe also helped me fulfil my dreams."

NEWS IN NUMBERS

The opposition conservative Popular Party (PP) in Spain wants the Court of Auditors to assess the cost of the Socialist PM's flights in an air force Falcon jet, accusing Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero of abuse of office. The PP says the flights should be counted as election expenses.

Mr Zapatero has been flying to campaign rallies in the Falcon, but the government says it is purely a question of personal security. Recent opinion polls put the PP about three percentage points ahead of the Socialists (PSOE).
