Russian general admits looting in Chechnya

The former Russian commander in Chechnya has said there have been numerous cases of looting by the Russian military there.

In an interview with the newspaper 'Novaya gazeta', General Vladimir Shamanov said some professional soldiers went to fight the war in Chechnya to improve their own material wealth.

He blamed the authorities for underpaying soldiers.

General Shamanov said his own salary was only one hundred and eighty US dollars a month compared to five to ten thousand dollars earned by an American general.
