Bill Clinton has begun his European trip with a visit to Portugal - the first official visit by a US president in 15 years.


The president with the Portuguese President Jorges Sampaio after a welcoming ceremony in Lisbon's Belem tower.


Mr Clinton greets wellwishers outside the tower.


After the EU-US summit: Mr Clinton with Portuguese Prime Minister Antonio Guterres, centre, and the EU Commission President Romano Prodi.


The US president meets Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak in Germany.


Mr Clinton is presented with the prestigious Charlemagne prize in Aachen, Germany, in recognition of services to European peace and unity.
