Passenger ferry sinks in Turkey

map

A ferry has sunk after leaving the north-western Turkish city of Bandirma for Istanbul, leaving at least one person dead, Turkish media report.

The vessel is said to have carried some 150 people and more than 70 vehicles, the Anatolia news agency says.

Civil defence teams, including divers and local fisherman, have been mobilised to rescue passengers from the Marmara Sea.

The vessel sank about 300m (1,000 ft) from the shore, media reports say.

A number of people have been taken to hospital.
