'Suicide' at Sarkozy departure

A border policeman shot himself in the head at a farewell ceremony for the French president, an Israeli police spokesman says.

The incident set off a panic at Ben-Gurion airport in Tel Aviv.

Nicolas Sarkozy's wife, Carla Bruni, ran up the stairs into their airplane, and security guards surrounded the French leader and whisked him aboard as well.

Police denied reports that there had been an attempted assassination attempt.
