Wreckage of the bus which crashed near Blois, central France

Seven people have been killed and 25 injured after a bus ploughed into a pillar by a motorway in central France.

The bus had travelled from Morocco and was carrying Moroccan workers to Paris.

Four helicopters, 140 firefighers and 25 police attended the scene. Seven people were said to be seriously hurt, including four in critical condition.

"The incredible state of the bus showed that the impact was extremely violent," said Transport Minister Dominique Bussereau after visiting the scene.

One of the theories being investigated is that the driver fell asleep at the wheel.

The vehicle ploughed into a pillar holding up a motorway flyover on the A10 motorway near the city of Blois, in the early hours of Friday morning.

The bus had left Tiznit in southern Morocco on Wednesday and was en route to the Paris suburb of Les Mureaux, the AFP news agency reported.

No other vehicle was reported to have been involved in the accident.
