Map of Italy
A US Black Hawk military helicopter has crashed in northern Italy, killing at least four people on board and injuring six others, Italian officials say.

The US could not confirm any deaths but said the army helicopter had taken off from the nearby US base at Aviano.

The crash happened in a rural area near the town of Santa Lucia di Piave, north of Treviso.

TV footage showed the burning wreckage of the helicopter, which had broken into at least two large pieces.

The UH-60 helicopter had left Aviano air base at 1130 (1030 GMT) on a training flight, Ansa news agency said.

The cause of the accident is unknown.

The Black Hawk is used by the US military for transporting troops and equipment, as well as carrying out air assaults and medical evacuations.

It can carry up to 12 people plus four crew members.
