Nicolas Sarkozy
Mr Sarkozy wanted his salary set by law and made "transparent"
The French parliament has decided to more than double President Nicolas Sarkozy's salary, to make it match that of the prime minister.

From 2008 Mr Sarkozy's salary will total 19,000 euros (13,243; $27,453) gross a month, equivalent to what PM Francois Fillon earns.

Mr Sarkozy currently earns about 7,700 euros a month.

The National Assembly also more than tripled the budget of Mr Sarkozy's 1,045 staff at the Elysee Palace.

The Elysee budget will now total about 100m euros annually, compared with 32m currently. The staff will all be on the Elysee's payroll, whereas before many of them were paid by ministries.

Commenting on the reorganisation of funding for the presidency, approved on Tuesday, Mr Sarkozy said: "I want transparency... it's not up to me to set it".
