At least 27 people were injured when a bus, carrying Americans on their way to a Catholic shrine, crashed in southern Bosnia, reports say.

The bus was carrying 34 passengers when it collided with another vehicle in Tarcin, about 20 km (12 miles) south of Sarajevo, the Associated Press said.

Dr Lidija Lincender at Kosevo hospital said: "Three people sustained serious injuries, possibly life-threatening."

The group were from Wisconsin, the US Embassy in Sarajevo said.

The Bosnian bus driver was also said to be injured in the collision.

The US embassy said that 20 of the injured were taken to Kosevo hos0pital in Sarajevo, while another seven were taken to the General Hospital.

The passengers were travelling to a shrine in the town of Medjugorje, it added, where apparitions of the Virgin Mary are believed to appear.
