Blaze destroys Geneva synagogue
Charred entrance of Hekhal Hanes synagogue 24 May 07
The synagogue stands in an affluent residential area
A fire has gutted a synagogue in the city of Geneva, in what Swiss police suspect was an arson attack.

Firefighters put out the Hekhal Hanes synagogue blaze about an hour after arriving at the scene in the early morning. Police said nobody was hurt.

The blaze appeared to have several sources, suggesting an arson attack, police said.

It left the interior charred and the heat smashed synagogue windows. The facade was also blackened.

The synagogue is a modern building in Geneva's Malagnou area. Some Jewish worshippers gathered at the scene as firefighters cleared debris, AFP news agency reports.

The blaze was extinguished at about 0616 (0415 GMT).
