Ukrainian officials say levels of cyanide along the Ukrainian stretch of the Danube have risen following the spill into the river last month from a Romanian gold mine.

Water samples near the town of Reni showed the amount had doubled overnight.

Fishing on the Danube and Tisza rivers has been banned until early March and local residents have been warned not to use the water.

However officials say the environmental damage is not expected to be as bad as in neighbouring Hungary.
