Three Britons have died in a house fire on a British military base in Cyprus, the Ministry of Defence has confirmed.

Cyprus state radio reported that a man and his two children died in the blaze, which broke out at RAF Akrotiri near the city of Limassol on Saturday night.

The MoD said a "thorough investigation" had begun, but it was too early to speculate on the cause of the fire.

It added that the victims' identities would not be released until relatives were informed.

An MoD spokeswoman said: "It is with deep regret that we can confirm that a house fire at RAF Akrotiri in Cyprus on Saturday night has tragically resulted in the deaths of three people.

"It is far too early to speculate on the cause of the incident and a thorough investigation has commenced."

She added: "Our thoughts, prayers and sympathies are with the family and friends of the deceased."

Britain maintains two military bases in Cyprus.
