Some 2,000 mourners have attended the funeral of the Serbian paramilitary leader Zeljko Raznatovic, better known as Arkan.

A war criminal indicted at the international tribunal at the Hague, Arkan was a national hero to some Serbs. Thousands crushed round his grave during the funeral service.

Members of the Tigers, Arkan's notorious volunteer force, carry the insignia and medals of their commander. The iconography of nationalism and orthodox Christianity were important aspects of Arkan's image.

Members of the Tigers formed the honour guard at the funeral.

Arkan's son, Mihajlo, pays his last respects.

Arkan is also survived by his wife, Svetlana Raznatovic Ceca, a famous Serbian folk singer.
