In pictures: Europe parties

Crowds of revellers packed Europe's capital cities for street parties and fireworks. Fog and drizzle blocked the view for some people but failed to dampen the party spirit.

Two million people crowded into a three-mile stretch of Berlin for a massive outdoor party. As the crowd grew authorities blocked the steets and urged people to stay at home. But revellers at the Brandenburg Gate saw a spectacular laser and light show.

As Big Ben chimed midnight the River Thames in London was lit up by fireworks set off from 16 barges.

Pope John Paul II welcomed in the new millennium with a message of hope that 2000 would be a year of joy and peace. It followed a pop concert in St Peter's Square where more than 130,000 people were gathered.

The skies of Paris were alight with colour for a crowded millennium celebration. Eleven glowing Ferris Wheels lined the Champs Elysees and golden sparks danced around the Eiffel Tower.

Party-goers celebrate the new millennium in front of the famous astronomical clock in the Old Town Square in Prague.

In Lisbon thousands of people gathered on the banks of the Tagus river by the 16th century Belem tower.

On the streets of Edinburgh, 180,000 revellers watched nearly five tonnes of fireworks detonate in four minutes after midnight to mark the new millennium.
